Nominative

Updated: Jan 25, 2023

The nominative case in German is used to identify the subject of a sentence. It is the default case, and is used when a noun or pronoun is performing the action of the verb. In other words, the nominative case is used to indicate the subject of a sentence.

To form the nominative case in German, you simply use the base form of the noun or pronoun. For example, the word "der Hund" (the dog) is in the nominative case, as it is the subject of the sentence "Der Hund läuft im Garten" (The dog is running in the garden).

It's important to note that German has three grammatical genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. The nominative case is formed differently for each gender, as shown in the table below:

Masculine: der

Feminine: die

Neuter: das

For example, "der Hund" is masculine, "die Katze" (the cat) is feminine, and "das Haus" (the house) is neuter.

In addition to indicating the subject of a sentence, the nominative case is also used for predicate nouns. A predicate noun is a noun that follows a linking verb (such as "sein" (to be)) and refers to the subject of the sentence. For example, in the sentence "Der Hund ist groß" (The dog is big), "der Hund" is the subject of the sentence and "groß" (big) is the predicate noun. Both "der Hund" and "groß" are in the nominative case.

It's important to note that the nominative case is not used for all subjects in German. In certain cases, the accusative case is used instead. For example, the accusative case is used for the direct object of a transitive verb (a verb that requires a direct object to complete its meaning), as well as for certain adverbs and prepositions.

In summary, the nominative case in German is used to identify the subject of a sentence and for predicate nouns. It is important to correctly use the nominative case in order to correctly convey the meaning of a sentence in German.
